In August (2017) my brother and I were given the opportunity to visit our grandfather in Vista, California. This would become a first chance for us to become acquainted with a man and a place that we previously only knew through childhood memories. Through recollection as well as the aura of Grandpa and Southern California we knew this trip would be a learning experience in total contrast to our domesticity in Metro Detroit. With much excitement and a touch of anxiety we boarded a plane.

Understanding one’s own family allows us to realize formative aspects of our identity. Geographical aspects of family's physical location serve the same purpose from another approach. Each person finds their own relevance of this purpose in their individual lives. Although everybody has a unique family background, learning about others gives our own experience context and credibility.
